2021 Summer Swing Series Complete

Finally, good weather, even better since it was pizza night! We had about 23 runners and a bunch of kids, maybe 30 to 35 total count. Didn't quite finish the pizza so I was able to send some home with a few families. Sure enjoyed seeing everyone this year! Hopefully we will be able to tee off the next series in May 2022. Be on the lookout for emails and updates on this website and Aorta's website next April. I've got a few numbers here if you are interested: 1. We ran 11 of 12 runs, with one run cancelled due to weather. 2. A total of 80 different runners participated over the 12 week period. One runner - Bill Lacy - had perfect attendance with 11 runs. Kim White, Steve Zenas, and Liz Zenas made 10 of 11 runs, and Matt Leach made 9 of 11 runs. We had many more with 6, 7, or 8 runs. We had quite a few who ran in their first Summer Swing Series this year - an estimated 26. Hope to see all of you next year! If anyone wants to continue to run on Tuesday nights - there is a smaller group of us that get together most Tuesdays about 6pm. Aug 3rd Run Update - Pizza Night

Rain chances are 30% this evening. Either way, we will run and the pizza will be there about 6:30 - so be sure you make plans to come! If we do have rain we will eat under the awning at the Rec Center. Sure have enjoyed seeing everyone this year. This is our last run of the series. Hope you can make it. Doug

Run 11 In The Books

We were fortunate to get our 11th run in, after an earlier thunderstorm. It was cooler, that was great! Next run is our last run, weather permitting, and is our ANNUAL PIZZA RUN. 4:30 Report June 27

The run is ON. It may be light rain, but maybe the rain is gone by 6pm. Radar looks like things are clearing for East Alabama. Come on and enjoy some cooler temps. Doug

Storms to Clear Out?

At 3pm it's too soon to tell if we can get our next to last run in today (7/27). I think there is a good chance we can. I'll make a decision at 4:30pm and post it here. Doug

Watermelon Run Complete

As hoped for, the rain was out of here by 5pm and lightning was not an issue,so we were able to get our run in. Attendance was down, which is understandable, with the weather being what is has been lately. We knocked out some watermelon! Even sent home extra melon with the Hall family. We have two runs left - with the last run being August 3rd - which will be free pizza day. Be sure you don't miss either run! Our series is coming to an end soon. Run Still On

I'm hoping the storm will have blown over by 5:30pm. Run is still "go" as of 3:15pm. Come eat some watermelon whether you run or not! If it looks bad at 5:15 or 5:30 I will post final decisions.

Watermelon Week!

I've got 3 big watermelons to ice down for tomorrow's run (July 20)so be sure to make it to run 10. The weather is iffy at best, so here's the plan: run anyway! On a more serious note, if there is lightning, we won't run. BUT I will be there with the watermelon anyway, which we could enjoy under the Rec Center awning, worst case scenario. All you can eat, free. So let's just hope that thunderstorms are not an issue tomorrow and that we can get this run in. After tomorrow, only two more runs this season, with the last run being our traditional pizza run (August 3). See you tomorrow - Doug

Run 9 Complete

We had a good turnout for run 9 on July 13. Good to see all of you, including new faces. Much better than last week, which was cancelled due to lightning. Next week is WATERMELON WEEK. I'll bring the watermelon, you eat it! We are winding down for the summer; 3 runs left. It's been fun and I've enjoyed seeing you each week. 7/6 RUN CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER

Moving On - Week 7

Ok Gang, we are on the downhill side of the run series - week 7 of 12 runs is in the books. See the link to the right "2021 Summer Swing Results" to see how you did, and if it applies, your progress. We were fortunate to have temps in the 80's and humidity in the 50's. Not bad for the end of June. In the next 5 weeks we will squeeze in our watermelon and pizza runs. I'm looking forward to that! As you veterans know, your race fees cover the cost, so no additional charge to runners. Also, we will have a run on the Tuesday following July 4th (next week), and I hope you will be able to join us. Meanwhile, stay hydrated and stay safe. Doug

Halfway Through

Run 5 Complete

We were fortunate to have low humidity tonight - how about 35%? Not bad for a June day in East Alabama! We even had a light breeze to go with it. Good turnout - good run times - good company - good food - I'll take that combination and run with it every time. Week 4 Run - Avoided the Rain!

It looked pretty bad about 4:30 pm - thunder crashing, sheets of rain, gusts of wind.....but by 6pm things had calmed down and it was a great evening for a run. Our Rule of Thumb is that the run will be held UNLESS there is lightning in the immediate area at 6pm. Keep that in mind for future runs...and remember that you can always give me a call at 334-524-5021 for updates. Results can be found in the link to the right ("2021 Summer Swing Results"). Week 3 Complete

Good to see everyone tonight! Much thanks to Raley and April for your help at the finish line. It's so nice to be getting back to normal, enjoying friends and meeting other runners. Week 2 Results

Run 1 of 2021 Season

Glad to see a good turnout for our first run! We had about 25 show up on a fairly breezy day for May. We will be wishing for some of this "cooler" weather in July! Next week I plan to crank up the grill and provide hamburgers and hot dogs. I will sell them at cost, whatever it turns out to be this year. Hope to see you next week, and bring a friend or two! 2021 Summer Swing Series - Begins May 18

About that time! With Covid-19 cases on the decline, we will be able to return to our full activities for the 2021 Summer Swing 5K series. First run will be on Tuesday May 18, and will continue each Tuesday until August 3 (12 runs). I hope that you will be able to join us this year.
