Week 14 In The Books
Here are the results of tonight's run. It was unusually cool and dry for an August run, nice to not have to worry about a thunderstorm for once.
It's been a good series, lots of new faces and plenty of regulars as well. Hard to believe the series is over, it always seems to fly by for me. Next May we will crank it up for our 15th year. Many thanks to all who helped cover for me when I was out, and those who helped at the finish line. Your assistance is always appreciated. This year we did have a couple of runs where a runner got off course. I'll try to improve on signage and better processes for next year. If you have any ideas that would help in that area, please let me know. Always open to suggestions, and always welcome any volunteers who want to assist in any area.
So, it's a wrap! Hope to see you next year! Doug

Next To Last Run
It's been a fun season, I've enjoyed it and I hope that you have as well. Looking forward to next year already! We have one run left, August 1st. Hope you can be here! Here are the results of tonight's run.

July 18 Results
Sorry for the delay. Will post results later this evening.
OK, here we go, Wednesday evening, a day late and a dollar short, but I DO have the results of last night's run right here. Thanks to Jay for directing the run for me, due to my wife being in surgery Tuesday. The surgery went well and she is back home, thankfully. Two more runs left! Be sure to make both of them or at least one. See you next week! Doug

Helping Others - July 18, 2017
I can't be present for our Summer Swing run this evening - will need to be with my wife while she undergoes surgery this afternoon. So, I called on my friend Jay Walters and asked him if he would direct the run this evening, and he said he would be glad to, without hesitation. It's great to have good friends! I have a request for you as well - we will not be putting out the cones and signs this afternoon on the course, so if you see someone new, please offer to team up with them and accompany them through the course, to prevent them taking a wrong turn. Be a friend! I will see you next week - Doug

Run 10 In the Books, 3 to Go
Hope that all of you enjoyed the Fourth. We got back in the "swing" of things with our 10th run, and 3 to go. It's been a good summer and the weather has been pretty cooperative, at least as much as could be expected for summertime in Alabama. Last week I spent in Red River, a beautiful little town of 500 people in the heart of the Sangre de Cristo mountains in north central New Mexico. Had the opportunity to climb Wheeler Peak, the highest point in NM at 13,610 feet. Being a runner paid off for me, as I was able to handle the altitude with no problems. Loads of fun, but glad to be back home.
Only a few runs left for the series. Hope to see you next week. Here are the results of today's run. Doug

Perfect June Weather
We don't get many late June Summer Swing runs where it is in the 80's with a breeze. If you were here tonight, you enjoyed a night that is about as good as it gets for this time of year. Here are the results of tonight's run. Remember, we will not run next Tuesday, the Fourth of July. Enjoy the holiday and I'll see you the following week. Doug

Yes It Did
Here are the results from tonight's run. If you anticipated it was going to rain this evening, you were right. It was more like a sprinkle, nice and cool and great for a summer run. If you did not make it, sorry you missed out! It was a perfect evening for lacing up and getting out. Hope to see you next week! Remember, the week of July 4th we will not have a run. Spend that Tuesday enjoying your favorite Fourth of July celebration. Me? On July 6th I take on Wheeler Peak in New Mexico - a lofty 13,161 feet. Have family out there and can't wait to get into the mountains. Forty degrees at night, mid seventies in the afternoon. Pumped about it! Doug
Run Rain This Evening?
The June 20 run will take place as scheduled this evening, rain or shine, so long as there is not lightning in the immediate area. In that case, the run would be cancelled. Hope to see you this evening! Doug

Halfway Home
Believe it or not, we are halfway through the 2017 Summer Swing 5K Series. Seven down, seven to go. We will not schedule a run for the Tuesday that falls on July 4th. It's not that far away!
Much thanks to Keena for representing RehabWorks and being available to us. I appreciate the time and effort it takes for them to join us and provide their expertise. And, thanks to Ben Garner at the finish line, I appreciate your help. It was good to see everyone, and I look forward to seeing you next week. Bring a friend! Here are our results for run 7.

A Good Rain
In what may have been the coolest run of the series, the rain held off long enough for us to get a good, cool run in. If you didn't make it, lace up and come out next time. Rule of thumb is - nearby lightning, no run, rain only, that's a good thing. Hope to see you all next week as we hit the midpoint of the series. Results of today's run are here, as well as in the results link in the margin. Doug

Heating Up
Here are the results for week 5. We have made it through the "easy" month of May, it's only going to get hotter as we go. Maybe so, but still not as big a challenge as some races. Those of you who have run the Tupelo Marathon may remember their race motto "Trample the weak, hurdle the dead!" (something like that) and the skull and crossbones on the race shirt. That's one race shirt that hangs proudly in my closet. Now THAT was a tough race! It's usually in early September, a nice "cool" month in the Deep South. See, we have it easy, a measly 3.1 miles to run. Piece of cake, right? Not quite, I'm afraid. Anyway, looking forward to the challenging weeks ahead. Can you do it?

Escaping the Rain
Those who were able to show up for Run 4 had a perfect evening for a run - nice and cool, no rain, and a little breeze. Won't see many more Tuesdays like that! If you have not come out yet, be sure to make it over our way next week. We have completed 4 of 13 runs so you have plenty of time left to work on your fitness, or just enjoy being with some sweaty friends (LOL!). Here are the results of this week's run.
Much thanks to the Boone family once again for bringing the orange slices and cookies, and to Evelyn for her help at the finish line. It also means a lot to me that RehabWorks Opelika sends a crew out each week. Take advantage of their expertise for stretching methodology, injury prevention, and good sound advice for those of us who pound the pavement.
Next week is our last run in May. Join us and then slide over to the free Summer Swing Concert at 7pm. Next up: Crossroads. See you next week. Doug

Finally, Fired Up the Grill
Third run is in the books, and here are the results. Had a good turnout, and as promised, fired up the grill and knocked out some hamburgers and hot dogs. Yeah! Glad to see a good turnout, and glad for the good, but HOT, weather. It's only going to get hotter as the series rolls on, so come on out now while it's still sorta cool and join us. Kid Blue was rockin' and most of our gang went across the street to join them. I have learned the secret for front row seats at the Summer Swing Concert. Just walk right up there and sit down, and after running a 5K on a hot afternoon, nobody wants to sit next to you and you can have that front row all to yourself! See, I did learn something in school after all.....LOL! See you next week -

Summer Swing 2017 Starts May 2!
Looking for something fun to do this summer? Come join us for the Summer Swing 5K series, starting on May 2nd and running through August 1st. Details are in the link to the right "Click here for run details". Cost is a measly $10 for the whole series,or $1 per run if you want to go that route. Eighteen and under, free. Can't beat that!
I'll provide further details within the next week or two. Meanwhile make plans to come out and join us. This 5K series is for all runners or walkers of any fitness level. Our normal attendance has been 30 to 40 runners per week, but it has grown every year, so who knows? This will be our 14th summer (I think) but I may have to do a little research to confirm that. Sounds about right!
Email me at durunforfun@yahoo.com, text or call at 334-524-5021 if you have any questions. More information soon.
See you in a few weeks,
Doug
